Areas of Learning and Development

All Curriculum topics are delivered in a lively, non-pressurised manner so that each child can learn at his/ her own pace. This enables children to enjoy the experience whilst they progress through their Learning Journey. The confidence, social and educational skills developed through the EYFS Curriculum prepares the children to proceed smoothly into full time education.

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All Ofsted-registered Early Years providers and schools must follow these standards. This also applies to childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes.

The EYFS Framework supports an integrated approach to early learning and care. It gives all professionals a set of common principles and commitments to deliver quality early education and childcare experiences to all children, regardless of the type of setting they attend.

Areas of Learning and Development

There are seven areas of learning and development which form part of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS).

PRIME AREAS

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This area of learning is about emotional well being, knowing who you are, where you fit in and feeling good about yourself. It also includes developing respect for others, social competence and a positive disposition towards learning. Confidence in dealing with difficult situations helps children to become resilient throughout their lives as adults.

Communication and Language

This area of learning includes communicating, speaking and listening in different situations and for different purposes. Children learn to listen attentively and to follow instructions and boundaries as well as gaining the confidence to express their needs and feelings.

Physical Development

This area of learning includes developing skills such as co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement.  It helps children to gain confidence in their self-care skills, for example toileting, dressing and washing hands.  Effective physical development encourages the children to feel the positive benefits of being healthy and active.

SPECIFIC AREAS

Understanding the World

Through learning about relationships, the lives and work of people within the community, as well as different multicultural customs and festivals, helps to foster understanding and acceptance of the differences and similarities between themselves and others. Learning all about nature, different materials, technology and working with tools helps children to understand the world around them.

Expressive Arts and Design

This area of learning includes art, music, dance, role-play, dressing-up and imaginative play. Being creative enables children to make connections between each area of learning. This helps to further extend the child's understanding of their environment.

Mathematics

This area of learning includes counting, sorting, matching, seeking patterns, making connections as well as working with numbers, shapes, space and measure. Mathematical understanding is encouraged and taught through Numicon, stories, songs, games and imaginative play. All of this ensures that children enjoy experimenting with numbers and patterns through play.

Literacy

Children are encouraged to develop their early literacy skills by making marks in paint, sand and other media. They listen to a variety of stories and rhymes and have access to a wide range of books. Eventually they will be able to read simple text and use writing for a variety of purposes.
